Article Abstract:

Many Eastern European countries formerly under communist rule appear to be making significant headway in institutionalizing democracy just a decade after the Berlin Wall fell. The preference for democratic values has consistently been demonstrated by voters who time and again have rejected anti-democratic alternatives. In line with the new political and economic realities, 10 post-communist countries have applied for membership in the European Union.

A diverging Europe

An overview is presented on what citizens in post-communist nations expect from democratic government. They indicate a desire not only for freedom of speech and freedom to vote their conscience, they also desire a government that is free of corruption and holds itself to its own rules.
