The NSC-68, a document used as the blueprint for American security policy throughout the Cold War, helped the country support a consistent perspective on military readiness, international engagement and opposition to Soviet expansion. It helped the US comprehend its role in international affairs and as a superpower. The document also aided the country in coordinating its security and foreign policies. The US can examine its experiences during the Cold War in designing a novel foreign policy.

The US' development of a new security strategy should be based on a careful evaluation of current and prospective conditions in the international system. It should also support the most cost-effective and appropriate methods of protection for the vital interests of the country.
