Becoming normal the Austrian way
Article Abstract:
The implications of the election outcome in the small Austrian province of Carinthia in Mar 1999 were to extend considerably beyond its borders. These election results, where the Rightist Freedom Party (FPO) won more than 40% of the regional parliament seats, were considered as being representative of a more general attack by populist and xenophobic movements on stability and even democracy throughout Europe. The book 'Austria: Out of the Shadow of the Past (Nations of the Modern World)' sheds useful insights into the FPO and Austrian politics and government.
