Bouncing back
Article Abstract:
Syrian President Hafez Assad considered Lebanon a great strategic asset in the regional game of nations and his patience, perseverance, and tactical shrewdness paid off as only the Syrians, it seemed, possessed the long-term leverage and were prepared to put up with the cost of pacifying Lebanon. President Bashar Al Assad continued the same vein, after succeeding his father, but gradually brought Syrian troop levels down in a bid to counter the growing vociferous protests of a Maronite-led opposition which became more forceful.

Bread not the bomb
Article Abstract:
The popularity of the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is declining on account of his focus on a confrontational foreign policy and failure to adopt a beneficial economic policy, as seen in his party's defeat in the local elections. The economic sanctions imposed on Iran by the west combined with the efforts of the politically resurgent reformists might be the best way to put pressure on Ahmadinejad.
