Non-market economy issues in the WTO anti-dumping law and accession negotiations

Article Abstract:

The accession of large transition economies to the World Trade Organization is compared to the accession of Eastern European countries to GATT (the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs) in the 1960s-70s. In the later case, the countries acceded with the understanding that illegal quantitative restrictions against heir exports would be eliminated, which, however, did not happen. For the present large transition economies seeking membership, such illegal discriminatory instruments have been introduced.

Bringing China into the concert of nations: an analysis of its accession to the WTO

Article Abstract:

The policy shift in the position of the European Union (EU) towards an open advocacy of China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) brings about economic and political gains. China's accession to the WTO will mean reinforcement of Chinese economic reforms and economic modernisation, global trade gains benefiting the Chinese economy and access to the markets of all WTO Member States. On the other hand, China's substantial political gains will include a boost to the promising process of Asia Europe Meetings and a differentiation of the EU political profile from the US.
