CIA says North Korea nearing bomb; inspections pact signed

Article Abstract:

The CIA believes that North Korea will soon produce its first nuclear weapon. The US agency doubts North Korea's sincerity in signing a safeguards pact with the International Atomic Energy Agency and a bilateral agreement with South Korea on the establishment of a nuclear-free zone in the peninsula. America is worried about the nuclear capability not only because of its adverse effect on Asian stability but also because of its impact on arms export to such countries as Syria and Iran which are currently importing Scud missiles from North Korea.

Security Council extends Iraqi sanctions; inspections continue

Article Abstract:

The UN will not lift the sanctions against Iraq because it states that the country has not complied with the terms of Resolution 687, the Gulf War ceasefire resolution. Iraq states that it has met the agreed terms and avers that continued sanctions will be a disincentive for continued compliance. Iraq has refused to disclose certain information about its nuclear weapons, such as who their foreign suppliers and technical advisers are. A UN fact-finding commission found Iraq to be concealing banned ballistic missiles.

Iraq hedges on arms inspections; CIA warns of ongoing programs

Article Abstract:

UN inspection teams overseeing the dismantlement of Iraq's weapons programs received mixed signals from Iraqi officials. One group from the UN was warned of death while another, from the International Atomic Energy Agency, was assured of cooperation. These developments came amidst CIA reports that Iraq was once again resuming the development of weapons of mass destruction. CIA Dir Robert Gates stated that international inspection will not halt Iraqi efforts.
