The Icelandic sagas and social order

Article Abstract:

The literary culture of the medieval Icelandic Commonwealth was dominated by vernacular writings or sagas. These sagas examined how Icelanders were successful in living in a stateless society in relative peace and order. Although this statelessness was a precursor to anarchy and chaos, the republic managed to maintain social order, equality and closeness. Other factors which helped the country to be orderly include the presence of a simple economic life, unified religion and an egalitarian society.
