DOE simulates nuclear explosion; GAO faults ignition facility

Article Abstract:

The Department of Energy's Stockpile Stewardship Program had a significant achievement in July 2000 as scientists simulated a thermonuclear weapon explosion. The General Accounting Office criticized the department in August for its management of the National Ignition Facility.

Shalikashvili issues report supporting Test Ban Treaty

Article Abstract:

Retired US Army Gen. Shalikashvili recommends a public information campaign to reverse the Senate's 1999 rejection of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, and recommends the Senate's objection to its indefinite duration be assuaged with a statutory 10-year treaty review.
