DOE simulates nuclear explosion; GAO faults ignition facility

Article Abstract:

The US Department of Energy's Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative successfully modeled a thermonuclear reaction in three dimensions for the first time in July 2000. The Los Alamos and Livermore-based research project had been criticized by the General Accounting Office.

Defense bill bars unilateral nuclear reductions, orders posture review

Article Abstract:

The Oct 30, 2000 signing of the 2001 National Defense Authorization Act effectively barred the US from lowering nuclear warhead counts below START I levels, despite the fact that Republican presidential nominee George W. Bush's promise unilaterally reduce nuclear forces in May 2000.
