Democracy and utopia

Article Abstract:

The quest of societies for utopia has engendered upheavals such as those of the French and American Revolutions which have, at best, only partially been able to solve the problem of balancing the ideals of equality and democracy. Communism, for one, which once hailed its classless society as a form of utopia has collapsed. Fascism, which also had utopian aims albeit in favor of the concept of nation, has also been discredited. The modern democracies that subscribe to Western models are also left with no clear direction with the discovery that utopia remains a mere idea.
