Designing new international organizations: a note on the structure and operation of the global environment facility

Article Abstract:

The concerted efforts of the United Nations and the World Bank to encourage a more sustainable global economic development have resulted in the establishment of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This new experimental international organization is a $1.2 billion collaborative funding mechanism that is intended to enable Third World nations to participate in the preservation of the global environment. The challenge for the GEF is to transform itself into an organization that is acceptable to both the developed and the developing countries.

However, this challenge may lead to widespread recognition of the role so-called spiritual values such as mutual respect and caring for one another can play in the real social space.
