Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks: a man who made a difference

Article Abstract:

Benjamin Hooks succeeded Roy Wilkins as NAACP executive director in 1977, at a time when the civil rignts movement was viewed negatively by the press and the public. Hooks tenure in the NAACP resulted in significant reforms for the civil rights movement as well as people-oriented issues. The campaign for the protection of civil rights shifted to electoral and economic reforms when segregation was eliminated. Hooks was instrumental in the implementation of the NAACP Fair Share Program, the Voting Rights Act and the ACT-SO program.

Meet Benjamin Lawson Hooks - a passionate fighter for justice

Article Abstract:

NAACP Executive Director Benjamin L. Hooks is a lawyer, a preacher of two detroit churches and a politician. Hooks completed his law degree at the DePaul University in Chicago. He is the first black to be appointed Tennessee judge and member of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). His tenure at the FCC succeeded in raising the number of black employees and raising the ranks of black FCC employees. Hooks is recognized as an effective leader for the NAACP which has 2,200 branches nationwide including youth charters.

Frances Dancy Hooks, a loyal faithful wife for 41 years, and now, herself a power

Article Abstract:

Frances Dancy Hooks has been married to NAACP CEO Benjamin L. Hooks for 41 years. Frances supported her husband in his stewardship of NAACP as his secretary, chief of office, security officer, confidante, speeach writer and editor. She has master's degree from the Tennessee State University and has held a number of teaching positions. The Hooks have one daughter, now a teacher, and two grandsons.
