The management of industrial pollution in central and eastern Europe

Article Abstract:

Central and Eastern European (CEE) states tended to focus on heavy industry and this exacerbated problems of pollution in those states, which was also linked to the policies of central planners. There were hopes that this would change after 1989, but the hopes have been overoptimistic, despite some improvements. There has been less western aid than expected, and some restructuring has been carried out, but it has been limited. There are also concerns relating to conflicts of interest where employment and economic growth could conflict with environmental goals.

Environmental employment opportunities: how green are Australia's green job credentials?

Article Abstract:

Australia's environmental employment programs have not achieved their goal of providing sufficient jobs in the environment industry. Furthermore, industrial employment growth remains dominant over efforts to protect the environment. Ecologically friendly approaches to economic development have been passed over for more traditional practices in the fields of forestry, mining, fishing and agriculture. Compared to other counties however, Canada's environment employment agenda remains more advanced.
