From poverty to Congress: Mfume defends affirmative action
Article Abstract:
Maryland Congressman Kweisi Mfume defends affirmative actions as a means to improve the condition of poor black minorities. He has made a task force to fight any move to scrap affirmative action which will deprive the minorities their right of equal opportunity. He has advocated a minority business and civil rights legislation. He also strengthened Equal Credit opportunity Act and amended the Community Reinvestment Act in favor of minorities. He hopes to take the help of all concerned people in his resolve to uplift minorities.

ACT-SO provides vehicle to youth success
Article Abstract:
Over 2,500 young people participated in the NAACP's 1995 ACT-SO competition for youth, which promotes excellence among African American youths. The competition was started 18 years ago by Vernon Jarrett. It awards prizes of $1,000, $750 and $500 in each category of competition, including music, art, poetry, writing and photography.

Job fair helps connect people and employers
Article Abstract:
The Diversity Job Fair at the NAACP's annual convention in Minneapolis provided an unique opportunity for African Americans to find a job that suits them. More than 150 companies were represented at the fair and more than 6,000 people attended the convention.
