Hong Kong's divergent tensions
Article Abstract:
The impending reunification of Hong Kong and China has led to spirited debate within Hong Kong as to the nature of its future government. Hong Kong's liberal parties, who have gained political strength through direct elections and their predominance in the Legislative Council, advocate greater emphasis on democracy. They would like a fair measure of political autonomy from China. Conservative and business oriented parties would rather focus on political stability and investment. Hong Kong's economy is highly dependent on China, and they feel that political alienation from China would be detrimental.

We should not forget Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
The United States, Britain or Europe should not lose interest in Hong Kong. Britain's obligations as a monitoring body through the year 2000 have been played down. However, it would be a serious mistake if Britain abdicates its power because there is no doubt that China regards Hong Kong as a subordinate. Those concerned with Hong Kong should be making efforts to understand China's role in the development of Hong Kong's future, especially in the area of social change.

Life in the shadow
Article Abstract:
The transformation of Hong Kong from a British crown colony to a special administrative region of China has brought it under the shadow of the politically authoritarian one-party rule of China, even as its capitalist economy is also dependent on the Chinese mainland. Any effort toward a democracy in Hong Kong is suppressed, as seen in the assured victory of a Beijing-backed Chief Executive of Hong Kong in the forthcoming elections.
