Istanbul to Hongkong: notes on non-western modernities
Article Abstract:
It has been a common belief among westerners that most Islamic countries have been stubborn in integrating basic modernities in Islamic lifestyles. What is basic to the West may be considered frivolous to most Moslems. Globalization has made it necessary for Islamic countries such as Turkey, to adjust to social change as they see fit. Contemporary Islam is actually a product of modernization rather than a stalwart of tradition. This allows non-westerners to combine local and global realities to develop their own identity.
