Malaysia: Turnover without change

Article Abstract:

The leadership turnover from the authoritarian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2003 was expected to bring about extensive changes in Malaysia's politics. However, it is seen that present Malaysian politics is more about the continuity of antidemocratic laws than any change, and tentative steps toward political liberalization in the short term are being understood as strategic decisions designed to preserve an autocratic status quo over the long term.

Political engineering in the Asia-Pacific

Article Abstract:

The political reforms that Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan and other Asia-Pacific countries have adopted after the 1997 financial crisis has resulted in a more genuine "Asian model" of democracy. A striking political-engineering trend is seen in the area of electoral-system design, in which mixed electoral systems that combine aspects of proportional representation (PR) with the majority principle are followed to take advantage of both the concepts.
