Malaysia's middle way: growth with equity

Article Abstract:

The resolution of economic problems is intertwined with that of social ills. One cannot be solved without simultaneously solving the other. Malaysia took the middle path in designing economic policies that also promoted social justice. Macroeconomic stabilization programs should put the economy on the path of growth that would not marginalize any group, provide opportunity for the poor and benefit everyone. Asian economies have been applying holistic approaches that are different from the West's but are suitable to Asian culture and context.

After social democracy and beyond Anglo-Saxon capitalism

Article Abstract:

The fall of social democracy and the growing problems associated with uncontrolled free and globalized market have driven the emerging democracies to seek for alternatives. A viable one is the communitarian practice which retains the economic benefits of the Anglo-Saxon market principles but contextualizes these to fit the state's individual culture. Thus, economic policies are informed by cultural principles such as Buddhism or Islam or post-Christianism.
