NMD bill clears Congress as senate re-examines ABM treaty
Article Abstract:
Congress has approved legislation which sets out US policy on the deployment of a national missile defense (NMD) system. President Bill Clinton appears likely to sign the bill. A decision is to be made in 2000 on the adoption of an NMD system. Meanwhile, hearings on ballistic missile defenses have been conducted by the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate in April and May 1999. There have been divisions on the ABM Treaty's status, and whether it ended when the Soviet Union ceased to exist.
