Nuclear addicts

Article Abstract:

The U.S. and Britain are advocating a whole new generation of nuclear weapons in the 21st century, even as they insist that Iran and North Korea give up their nuclear aspirations. The former chief United Nations weapons inspector for Iraq believes one way to persuade nations to move away from a nuclear weapons option would be for the states to reduce their addiction to such weapons and create incentives for arms control and disarmament.

Official nuclear powers like the U.S., the U.K., France and Russia are taking steps to ensure that their nuclear deterrents continue well into the 21st century. However, it is possible that the nuclear world will be very different in 2030, possibly triggered by several critical events, such as a radical evolution of the Euro-Atlantic strategic context, or the collapse of the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
