Presidents in poverty
Article Abstract:
Haiti may revert to violence following Jean-Bertrand Aristide's replacement as president by his close ally Rene Preval. A lack of economic progress, the resumption of old conflicts between Haitian and US leadership, and the continued existence of an armed opposition all bode ill, and could lead to the spectacle of mass flight during a US election year. Unless Preval can do as well as the more eloquent and charismatic Aristide at damping public anger, democracy could again be replaced by human rights abuses.

Thailand: staggering back to democracy
Article Abstract:
The leadership of Anand Panyarachun may lead Thailand back to democracy and away from the control of the present junta, the National Peace Keeping Council (NPKC). As interim Prime Minister, Anand has made major economic and social reforms, walking a tightrope between the junta and reformist party politicians. As 1992 elections approach, the junta's power has been somewhat reduced, with public opinion set against the military leaders and the major political parties hoping to build on Anand's legacy.
