Privatization of mental health services: the Massachusetts experiment

Article Abstract:

The privatization of mental health care in Massachusetts, which the conservative administration of Republican Governor William Weld initiated to control costs by turning state-run services over to the private sector, has raised a number of issues. The policy, which has included both aftercare and inpatient services, has produced unfortunate consequences such as overcrowding. Moreover, privatization is intensifying the struggle for the remaining government support and may actually promote greater centralization despite the intentions of its proponents.
