Public opinion in new democracies: political ambivalence in South Korea and Taiwan
Article Abstract:
National-sample surveys of public opinion in South Korea and Taiwan reveal that most Koreans and Taiwanese favor democracy in principle while simultaneously adhering to some authoritarian and Confucian principles. Koreans and Taiwanese prefer democracy only as a matter of convenience and are not committed to wiping out the last vestiges of authoritarianism. They are also unprepared to expand the scope of democratic practices and institutions.
