Riding the nuclear tiger: the search for security in South Asia

Article Abstract:

The history of armed conflict and mutual mistrust between India and Pakistan impedes the reduction of nuclear weapon construction in the sub-continent. Terrorist activity in both countries, border skirmishes and the Kashmir issue, compounded with India's fear of Chinese aggression, lead the governments to advocate nuclear weapons programs to prevent war. This is supported by the military and political structures in both countries. The nuclear arms status of India and China and the measures taken to maintain a truce, such as 'no-fly' zones and a direct telephonic connection between the two deputy chiefs of staff, are discussed.
