Search for identity: the impact of the 'great books' in public administration

Article Abstract:

The problem exists that public administration scholars rely too much on the works in other disciplines for studies on public administration. The problem was reversing itself in the 1970s, when more study came from books by and/or about public administration rather than the use of the generic management books of the 1960s. But this trend again reversed itself in the 1980s. The lack of the use of books by and/or about public administration has lead to what is called an 'identity crisis' in public administration. The data to support this concept is based on the use of the 'great books' in public administration on research published in acedemic periodicals.

How bad is the federal deficit?

Article Abstract:

There are two competing thoughts on the result of the large federal deficit. The traditional view holds that the federal deficit generates increased consumer spending and a lower national savings, which then results in a lower standard of living. The Ricardian view says that the federal deficit has little effect on the economy. The Ricardian view seems to be upheld by emperical data from US's history and from other countries, more so than the traditional view.

Expanding the opportunity for partisan activity among government employees: potential effects on federal executives' political involvement

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the impact of the Hatch Act of 1939 and related effects on political activities involving government employees and federal executives is presented. The analysis was based on a 1990 survey of federal Senior Executive Service personnel. It is shown that removal of the Act's constraints would generate an increase in the political activities of public employees and government executives.
