Shell, the Brent Spar and Greenpeace: a doomed tryst?
Article Abstract:
Shell U.K. Ltd.'s plan to dump the Brent Spar oil storage and loading platform in the Atlantic Ocean had to be abandoned in the face of stiff resistance from Greenpeace. Greenpeace's protests against Shell's plans assumes significance for various reasons. Shell's project was to be the first among 400 such disposals. Besides, scientists failed to arrive at a consensus on the fallout of Brent Spar disposal on the marine environment and the project, if implemented, would set a bad precedent. Moreover, Greenpeace was keen to refurbish its image as a direct action organization.

Sustainable development in the Czech Republic: a doomed process?
Article Abstract:
Inconsistencies in the implementation of environmental policies in the Czech Republic have greatly affected the achievement of sustainable development. The government's approach to the country's environmental problems consisted of investments in end-of-pipe technologies which only addressed previous problems but do not prevent the emergence of new ones. The current efforts to conform environmental policies to that of the European Union is primarily influenced by the desire to show preparedness to join Western organizations.

As such, the issues go well beyond the issue of the sovereignty of the United Kingdom and require a more global perspective.
