Soft authoritarianism in Malaysia and Singapore

Article Abstract:

Malaysia and Singapore have retained the basic democratic institutions that were passed on to them by their former British colonial masters. However, unlike democratic institutions, democratic ideals and practices in both countries were not able to withstand the test of time. This development can be attributed to the failure of the people in both countries to cultivate the habits and attitudes required in a civic culture and participatory democracy. However, in the face of globalism, Singapore and Malaysia are slowly making the transition from 'soft authoritarianism' to democracy.
