Taking the movies to war

Article Abstract:

Men and a number of women have tried for ages to communicate the experience of battles through prose and poetry, and, for roughly less than 100 years, they have also tried to communicate it through motion pictures. Inevitably, however, even the most excellent war movies do not accurately portray battles or armed conflict, for a number of reasons. No movie despite careful execution can by itself tell the whole story of a military engagement. However, films do have a considerable though perhaps unappreciated value as a tool for teaching and learning about war or military organizations.

The shareholders strike back: issues in the research of shareholder activism

Article Abstract:

Corporate Annual General Meetings (AGMs) tend to involve a summary of the company's performance, but the AGM of Shell on May 14 1997 involved questions from stockholders on the company's human rights and environmental policies. The World Wide Fund for Nature and Amnesty International devised the resolution which was taken up by stockholders. Social movement theory can help in understanding stockholder activism, and theoretical insights can be gained from empirical research on this issue, especially in the United Kingdom.

Taking the message back from the medium
