Sondhi Limthongkul, a local media tycoon and one-time ally of the Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, began to organize public rallies in central Bangkok, denouncing the government for allegedly fostering corruption, abusing power, stifling the media, and subverting the country's young and fragile democratic institutions by reportedly appointing friends and relatives to important positions in the judiciary. There were allegation of human rights abuses, and Thaksin was accused of mishandling the situation in the country's Muslim-dominated south, where more than one thousand people have died in sectarian violence since January 2004.

Perpetual crisis

Monarchy is the stabilizing factor in Thailand's politics, but as King Bhumibol Adulyadej celebrates sixty years on the throne in 2006, succession questions are beginning to emerge. The bloodless military coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his party in September 2006 highlights the fact that for the first time in modern Thai history, there is a serious divide between the government and institutions close to the monarchy.

The Burmese government's decision to extend the house arrest of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has caused dismay at home and disappointment to the country's allies in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Burma's junta's decision has reflected the failure of both ASEAN's policy of constructive engagement and economic and political pressures from the west.
