The burning season
Article Abstract:
Wildfires in 1998 have been reported in countries such as Columbia, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Guyana, Venezuela, and Vietnam. Brazil and Indonesia have also reported fires in their tropical forests. The Institute for Environmental Research in the Amazon estimated that about 70% of these fires happened in deforested areas and the other 30% happened in otherwise pristine areas. The El Nino weather system has been blamed for much of the destruction, but in countries such as Brazil, fire was used as a primary agent of land clearance.

From piety to a cosmic order
Article Abstract:
The 1996 philosophical pamphlet 'Animal Rights and Wrongs' by Roger Scruton forms a basis on which further thinking concerning animal life and human behaviour towards animals should be built. Through development of various theories Scruton concluded that animals cannot have rights. Whilst his arguments support the conservative rural viewpoint on animal concerns they raise many issues which invite further debate. His ideas on piety are examined.
