The role of the capital markets in restructuring health care

Article Abstract:

Uneven implications for access, quality and cost coming from the introduction of private capital into health care are discussed. This factor suffices to raise concern about this way of health provider finance. Private capital cannot be dropped at this point due to massive existing investment and the US must figure out how to make it work better.

The market for medical ethics

Article Abstract:

The effect of professional ethics norms on social welfare is discussed. Portrayals of professional ethics as monopolistic restraints on trade do not acknowledge the market pressures continually remodeling medical ethics. Arrow's seminal contribution remains his analysis of ethical commitment as a market-driven phenomenon.

Article Abstract:

Changes in the health care industry workforce since Kenneth J. Arrow's 1963 article are discussed and include changes in licensure and the subsidization of medical education. Nonphysician clinicians are licensed in increasing numbers because of the perception that they can provide cheaper care.
