The roots of the hostage crisis

Article Abstract:

The hostage crisis had its roots in post-revolutionary Iran's insecurity. The new Khomeini regime feared, in 1979, that the US was conspiring against it. This led to Khomeini's approval of the initial hostage-taking at the US embassy in Iran. The crisis spread to Lebanon with the 1982 Israeli invasion. As Iran assisted Lebanese Shias and founded the Hezbollah, Israeli-backed Phalangists kidnapped four Iranian officials. The Hezbollah responded with a wave of kidnappings of Westerners. Ultimately, Iran's radicalism cooled as it found the hostage issue had isolated it and empowered rival Iraq.

Article Abstract:

The G8 Summit in Strelna, a suburb in St. Petersburgh, would be hosted by a country highly criticized in the United States and in Europe over the domestic developments and foreign policy. The main problem of the day is to stop and reverse Iran's nuclear efforts and the success and real test of the G8 relevance is its ability to form a joint effective political strategy to solve this problem.

Article Abstract:

Iran has energy that China needs and Beijing provides a counter balance to western pressures on Tehran and the benefits are clear and so are the risks for a rising power in labyrinthine politics of the Middle East. The expanding economic and diplomatic contacts present important opportunities to significantly shape future Middle Eastern policies for both west and east.
