Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and the role of interdisciplinary studies
Article Abstract:
Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, founders of the University of Virginia School of Law, sought out a person of broad knowledge to hold the first Chair of Law at the school. They wanted someone who knew more than the rules of law and was not tied to politics, a person who could take a philosophical approach to the topic. As such, both Jefferson and Madison would probably have appreciated the fact that a conference on feminism and law was held at the school in 1994.
