Magic squares cornered
Article Abstract:
A long-standing difficult problem concerning the construction and enumeration of a certain type of magic square has been resolved by Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw and David Bree in their new book. They have found a way to construct all the most-perfect squares of any order, and a method of calculating their number. A magic square is referred to as pandiagonal if each of its broken diagonals add up to the magic constant, and a pandiagonal square is called 'most perfect' if it has similar properties to the order-4 pandiagonals.

Time to involve the big giver
Article Abstract:
Japan has been donating on average about 12 bil to 156 countries annually. But the international aid community has had little success with this Japanese policy. Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have set up branches in Japan, but access to funds has become increasingly difficult. Some argue that the difficulty of developing links can be found in Japanese history of Confucianism, creating a hierarchial and centralized society where individual good is subordinate to that of a group.
