Turkey's circumspect activism
Article Abstract:
The government of Turkish Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel has adopted a circumspect activism in its international relations. Turkey's response to the Balkan crisis and problems in the Turkic states of the former Soviet Union has been active if not aggressive. Demirel's government has offered extensive technical assistance and trade credits to the needy Turkic republics. It has also made clear that it will assist any UN peacekeeping or peacemaking efforts in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Unjustified claims that these moves reveal underlying Turkish expansionism do not take into account Turkish domestic problems.

Ex-Yugoslavia's neighbours: who wants what?
Article Abstract:
The concerns of neighboring countries of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) include old territorial conflicts, ethnic minorities in their own countries and in the SFRY, domestic and foreign policy and regional stability. Austria's and Hungary's sympathies lie with Slovenia and Croatia, while Romania has cooperated with EC sanctions against Serbia, even though that country is an important purchaser of Romanian oil. Turkey favors the Moslem minority in the SFRY, while Greece fears another Moslem state, and Albania's interests are domestic.

Azerbaijan and the neighbours
Article Abstract:
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created political conflicts in Azerbaijan. President Ayaz Mutalibov, who has been portrayed as both opportunistic and pragmatic, must address the issues that will affect both the Middle East and the former Soviet Union. The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the annexation of Nagorno-Karabakh by Armenia has escalated. The cultural ties between Turkey and Azerbaijan may lead the two countries to become allies in the Middle East.
