U.S. remains largest supplier to a shrinking arms market

Article Abstract:

The US has maintained its status as the largest arms exporter in the world in 1997 even as the global arms market continues to shrink. According to an annual Congressional Research Service report authored by Richard F. Grimmett, the US led all arms suppliers in deliveries and new agreements for conventional weapons during the year. Worldwide arms sales agreements declined at the same time that deliveries increased. Developing countries were still the largest buyers of arms in 1997.
