Unwelcome return
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the implications of plans announced by the European Union in December 2002 for the repatriation of Afghan asylum seekers to their homeland. While the plan focuses on the voluntary return of Afghans to Afghanistan, it also states explicitly that those who attempt to stay in Europe will be forcibly removed. It is argued that these plans undermine the principles on which asylum policies have been built and potentially set a worrying precedent for new waves of refugees and asylum seekers, including the expected increased number of Iraqi refugees.
