Vietnam's tentative transformation
Article Abstract:
Vietnam is one of five countries that remained under communist rule after the demise of the USSR. However, although the Vietnamese Communist Party remains the country's sole political party and steadfastly clings to the principle of democratic centralism, it recognizes that economic reforms are essential to the country's growth in an increasingly competitive global business environment. Moreover, it has acknowledged that political changes are needed if economic reforms are to be successful.

Vietnam's America watchers in a new era
Article Abstract:
Vietnam is striving to improve its expertise and knowledge regarding the US and in forming policies toward the US. Its most reliable expertise comes from government officials, especially from those who have come into positions since 1960 and came from academia rather than the military, with the Foreign Ministry leading the Party External Relations Commission and the Defense Ministry. Communist Party training institutions lack expertise, as do the media, in understanding the US.
