What future for the British monarchy?

Article Abstract:

The British monarchy is likely to endure beyond its present problems, though perhaps in a somewhat reduced form, despite recent suggestions of republicanism. The Queen Mother remains enormously popular, and Queen Elizabeth shows every sign of remaining capable well into the 21st century. Current dissatisfaction is aimed at Prince Charles, a change from the 1980s when it focused on Sarah Ferguson and other minor royals. While the press has often been blamed for problems, it has frequently proven to be right.

The British monarchy: doubts and uncertainties

Article Abstract:

Queen Elizabeth's declaration that 1992 was a horrible year has been interpreted by many to mean a bad year for the British monarchy. Republican sentiment has run through Britain before, but the current troubles with the royal family have occasioned only a mild resurgence. The many difficulties that Parliament would face in passing legislation to move to a republican form of government suggest the improbability of such a move.
