What is informal economy, anyway?

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the the meaning of the term 'informal economy' and its usage by policymakers. The author explores various definitions of the term; informal economic activity (IEA) occurs when production and distribution of goods and services are not reported in the National Income Accounts; two features include market transactions and the legality of production; four structures of IEA are given for household, informal, underground and criminal sectors.

This article examines the possiblity and complications of ending informality in the economic sectors in Latin America. The author asserts that cultural change by informal enterpreneurs is necessary, as well as the elimination of bureaucratic hurdles.

This article examines possible reasons why the majority of the world's countries remain poor. The author uses data mainly from Egypt to illustrate his theory that the lack of formal property rights prevent the poor for gaining access to capital.
