White House, key senators intensify push for CTBT
Article Abstract:
The White House and a group of nine key senators have held a special conference in a move to secure US ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The conference was told that the American public overwhelmingly supports a worldwide ban on nuclear testing, but Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Jesse Helms has little enthusiasm for CTBT. Despite his intransigence, support for its ratification continues and it is hoped that the administration will be able to force a Senate floor vote in its favour in time for a special conference in Vienna to be held in October 1999.

DOE plans to obtain tritium from existing civilian reactors
Article Abstract:
The US Energy Department aims to produce tritium, used in nuclear weapons, in civilian light-water reactors. Other options would have included constructing a linear accelerator. Tritium has not been produced by the US since 1988, and has used dismantled warheads to repelnish supplies. Critics argue that this move could encourage other nations to use civilian reactors to produce material for nuclear weapons. Tritium is seen as in a different category from plutonium, however, since it cannot be used to produce nuclear weapons on its own, unlike plutonium.
