William Dean Howells: the lookout on the watchtower
Article Abstract:
William Dean Howells' standing in literary history is placed second to his contemporaries Mark Twain and Henry James, but he deserves an equal rating on the merit of his outstanding literary achievements. He was a prolific writer and was associated with several important magazines. He was always on the look out for deserving writers. Mark Twain, Henrik Ibsen, Leo Tolstoy and Emile Zola are some of his beneficiaries. However, his fame rests on three classic novels, 'A Modern Instance,' 'Indian Summer' and 'The Rise of Silas Lapham.' These novels, hailed as masterpieces of realism, are discussed.
