Article Abstract:

The apparent capacity of Uzbek authorities to ignore their own international human rights commitments has led to a diplomatic fallout which might significantly alter the configuration of great power politics in the region. Uzbek authorities have suggested the disturbances were the result of a conspiracy by outside linked to international Islamist terror networks.

A people's trauma

Article Abstract:

The tragic conclusion of the siege of school No.1 in Beslan, North Ossetia, in 2004 is a watershed in post-Soviet Russia's brief but troubled history. The primitive quantitative perspective, underestimates the psychological impact, not only on the families of the dead and injured, but also on Russia as a nation, people and society.

Article Abstract:

The handling of the hostage crisis in Beslan in 2004 highlighted the low skill level between Russia's military and other armed security forces. Lack of training and poor discipline has traditionally characterized military operations in Chechnya, but they were rarely seen so publicly as in North Ossetia.
