A social identity maintenance model of groupthink
Article Abstract:
A model of groupthink which identifies it as a social identity maintenance (SIM) mechanism was developed to better comprehend what exactly it is. Symptoms of groupthink such as streotyping others, self-censorship, mindgurading, and illusion of unanimity can be found in the actions of cult members such as Heaven's Gate, Millerites, or the Aum Shinrikyo. The SIM model presents groupthink as an integrated effort by a group to preserve a definite stand in the face of adversarial situations.

Twenty-five years of groupthink theory and research: lessons from the evaluation of a theory
Article Abstract:
Irving Janis's groupthink theory (1972, 1982) states that decision making groups are likely to succumb to erroneous resolutions due to factors including collective rationalization, self-censorship, stereotyping, and inadequate information searching. Groupthink has left behavioral scientists with important lessons after 25 years of study including the perils of uncritical acceptance, the significance of replication research, and the influence of intuitive appeal.

Group dynamics in Janis's theory of groupthink: backward and forward
Article Abstract:
The Groupthink model of Janis (1982) has been used to account for the erroneous group decision processes which undermine sound decision making. However, Janis's model was limited by its dependence on group dynamics research to enhance decision making. Janis's research for curbing groupthink, such as impartiality in leadership and systematic information query, can aid groups in making decisions regardless of group dynamics.
