Bella Steinberg Van Bark, M.D

Article Abstract:

Dr Bella Steinberg Van Bark died on Dec 19, 1992, from a brain tumor after a long, successful career in psychoanalysis. She was a Trustee of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis and a member of its Faculty Council. Van Bark received her medical degree from the Women's Medical College and then chose psychiatry after working in various medical specialities. She began group therapy for older people and for widows and widowers. Many of her former patients worked together to see that she had the best care during her last year of declining health.

Dr. Alexandra Symonds' legacy of advancing women psychiatrists and promoting women's mental health

Article Abstract:

This article examines the life and career of twentieth century American psychiatrist Alexandra Symonds. Her research in feminine psychology and her role in establishing the Association of Women Psychiatrists helped to raise awareness of women's unique mental health issues and contributions to professional psychiatry.
