Children's responses to adult-adult and mother-child arguments: the role of parental marital conflict and distress

Article Abstract:

Children's responses to adult-adult and mother-child arguments were analyzed to determine the situations in which children are more likely to feel threatened and aroused during family disputes. Results support the sensitization hypothesis which contends that marital conflict affects children's emotional response to interadult disputes and mother-sibling arguments. The results are also consistent with the emotional security hypothesis which argues that frequent marital conflict and violence promotes greater levels of emotional disregulation and arousal to conflicts.

Parental problem drinking and children's adjustment: attachment and family functioning as moderators and mediators of risk

Article Abstract:

A study investigating the perceived child-parent attachment and family cohesion and adaptability as predictors, moderators, and mediators of risk in the associations between children's exposure to parental problem drinking and their adjustment and cognitive outcomes are presented. The results of the study reveal the importance of examinations of family functioning variables for a better elucidation of the conditions.
