Commentary

Article Abstract:

Mass media in general, and reporters and editors in particular, have important roles to play in ensuring the proper coverage of suicides. Fortunately, media professionals are increasingly becoming aware of the capability of news reports to influence people's behavior. This is in stark contrast to the earlier belief that the purpose of news reports is solely to inform. Consequently, most reporters and editors now work together to present news about suicides in their proper context. Several suicide cases, such as that of singer Kurt Cobain, illustrate this new attitude.

Commentary on Stack (1995)

Article Abstract:

Steven Stack's research regarding the effects of publicizing executions showed a decrease in homicide among Caucasians but none among African-Americans. His conclusion that even this slight decrease made publicizing executions desirable did not take into account other social effects executions have, such as enforcing the message that violence is an appropriate response to violence or how desensitizing people to violence can lead to more violence. His research also failed to account for economic factors in homicide.

Data, class, and nature-of-effect issues: reply to Goetting

Article Abstract:

Research into the effect of publicizing executions shows that race is a more significant factor than economics, in spite of Ann Goetting's criticism of Steven Stack's work. African Americans face a higher risk of homicide than Caucasians for more reasons than economic ones. Goetting's criticism regarding the media's potential of increasing violence by publicizing executions is not supported by research.
