Comments on "A Fairbairnian object-relations perspective on self psychology" by Michael Robbins, M.D

Article Abstract:

Michael Robbins's article is helpful in pointing out relations between Fairbairn's object relations theory and Kohut's self psychology. Kohut's focus on a particular stage of psychological development means that his theory could easily be integrated into psychoanalysis if the limitations of the theory are also recognized. The emphasis on failure of empathy, for example, does not account for the different kinds of failures which lead to different outcomes.

Voice of the analyst

Article Abstract:

Psychotherapists need to find their own voice, their own view of the world, before they can help patients find their voice. The philosophies therapists base their work on may vary, whether Mahlerian or Skinnerian, and by creative synthesis therapists find unique ways of using them. Therapists should not become so absorbed in expressing their own identities, however, that they forget their purpose to help others find their unique expression.

Discussion of Bernard J. Paris's "Karen Horney's vision of the self"

Article Abstract:

The subtle conceptual problems associated with language usage are explored. Scholars may undermine their arguments by ignoring the many meanings and implications of words used to convey complex theories, such as conceptualizations of the self. In current psychological discourse, the term "integration" is widely applied and may lead to invalid theoretical assumptions and degradation of the term.
