Conditioning approaches in behavioral medicine
Article Abstract:
Robert Ader, Herbert Weiner and Andrew Baum (Eds.) in ''Experimental Foundations of Behavioral Medicine: Conditioning Approaches'' (1988), have put together a collection of papers from meetings that took place at the Academy of Behavioral Research in 1985 to explore the role of conditioning processes in the development and reduction of disease symptoms. Discussions include the conditioning principles which regulate bodily processes and the role of conditioning in terms of specific disease models. The clinical applicability of conditioning principles for specific disorders, as well as the importance of stressing behavioral medicine in clinical education, is also discussed. Unfortunately, although the chapters were written by well-recognized experts in the field, they do not encompass the most recent advances in conditioning research, since they are based on research only through 1985. As well, many chapters do not venture beyond describing the results of the author's clinical research, and fail to offer discussions of future research possibilities or implications. There are valuable contributions on cardiovascular regulation, endocrine function, hypertension, asthma and diabetes, which do include clear summaries of relatively recent advances in related areas of behavioral medicine. However, these discussions also fail to consider theoretical or clinical implications, limiting the current value of this work. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Illuminating approaches to cellular physiology
Article Abstract:
Optical techniques have been developed to further the research of cell surface structures, cellular array electric activity and other aspects of cellular physiology and morphology. Two-photon confocal laser-scanning microscope (CLSM) produces higher-resolution images with minimal photobelaching and photodamage than conventional CLSM. Meanwhile, the contours and surfaces of shells are better studied by using atomic-force microscopy. The scanning-probe microscopy technique can be applied in aqueous environments and optically scan and identify different cell regions.

Behavioral intervention with and without family support for rheumatoid arthritis
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of behavioral interventionsin the pain management program of outpatients with rheumatoid arthritis was assessed. Additionally, the benefit of integrating a family member in the treatment program was also evaluated. The results showed that behavioral intervention significantly improved joint pain condition as well as reduced swelling severity. In addition, family support appeared to contribute to the efficacy of behavioral intervention. The clinical improvement may have been mediated by underlying changes in the immune system activity.
