Connections between neuroscientists from Europe and Latin America reinforced

Article Abstract:

A meeting between neuroscientists from Europe and Latin America was held in April 1997 to discuss researches available to neuroscientists from the two regions. German Wolfhard Almers discussed his study on the molecular and electrophysiological characterization of neurotransmitter exocytosis. Mexican Ubaldo Garcia presented his research on the role of P-type calcium currents involved in neuronal firing and secretion of the red pigment-concentrating hormone from identified crayfish. Other studies discussed were about synaptic transmission and brain development.

Deciding what to do next

Article Abstract:

Research involving invertebrate motor control and patients with frontal-lobe lesions are shedding new light on the neurobiology of decision making. Studies show that somatic markers or signals from an animal's body labels an option and its consequences as good or bad and assist in the logical process of choice. However, patients with lesions in the ventromedial frontal cortex seem unable to use their somatic markers when making choices, resulting in high-risk behavior.

Early beginnings for adult brain pathology

Article Abstract:

The meeting on cortical development held in Paris, France in Oct. 1996 focused on the disturbances that may occur when the delicate balance between intracellular, extracellular and environmental factors is not maintained. A paper discussed the obvious ill effects of cocaine and hypoxia and also claimed that even small disturbances can result in dyslexia or, worse, schizophrenia.
